It helps to have:

- Roughly how big the basement is and how much of it you want finished
- What you want down there: family room, bedroom, bathroom, bar, theater, office
- Whether the basement has ever had water, and whether you have a sump pump
- Whether there's a plumbing rough-in in the floor
- Your timeline, such as a move-in date or a sale
